I’ve just read another comic book (of all things). This time it’s Gonzo: A Graphic Biography of Hunter S. Thompson by Will Bingley and Anthony Hope-Smith. I must confess that I do know the artist and writer of this book which was my primary reason for reading it, but I must say it really is [...]
I rarely read comics these days but after reading Mould Map last week I’ve only gone and read another, although technically it’s a collection of comics I’ve already read in their previous incarnations. The book in question is Batman:Ego and Other Tails which is not a typo but a reference that the majority of the [...]
I just read Mould Map. It’s an A3 sized anthology of one page comics by a collection of seemingly like minded cartoonists and artists from all over the world. The strips are all short science fiction stories and often dreamlike and surreal. It’s an impressive object. Printed with just two colours on heavy stock paper [...]
Just started reading X-Rated: Adventures of an Exploitation Filmmaker by Stanley Long with Simon Sheridan. It’s the autobiography (although I don’t know if you can call it that when it’s ghost written) of the British film director Stanley Long. Stanley Long is best known as the director of the Adventures of… series which are like [...]
Just started reading The Alcoholic by Jonathan Ames and Dean Haspiel. It’s a comic book or graphic novel if you’re so inclined but I’ve never really liked the term. It always sounds to me like someone trying to make the word “comics” sound more highbrow. You probably already know, but if you don’t I work [...]
Just finished reading How I Escaped My Certian Fate: The Life and Deaths of a Stand-Up Comedian by Stewart Lee. I reckon you’d like it if you’re reading this. It’s basically transcripts of his three commercially available DVDs, which are heavilly annotated giving a personal and professional overview of his whole career. Highly recommended.
I finally read Sarah MacIntyre‘s Dear Diary: 1988-1990 despite it being only several pages long. It’s beautifully drawn and more charming that a monicled fox.
I’m currently reading Hellraisers: The Life and Inebriated Times of Richard Burton, Richard Harris, Peter O’Toole and Oliver Reed by Robert Sellers. It’s not quite as good as I’d been led to believe but there are some nice stories. I was already a fan of most of the actors covered but if anything rather than [...]
I’m currently reading The Score By Richard Stark. Stark is a pseudonym for the late crime writer Donald Westlake. Westlake adopted the name Stark when he wrote his series of Parker novels and The Score is the fifth in the series from 1964. I’ve read the previous four Parker novels last year but there’s not [...]
I am currently reading It’s Not a Runner Bean by Mark Steel. I can’t remember who recommended this to me but it’s great so far. It’s basically a chronicle of his stand up career told in short funny bursts each lasting just a few pages each. It reads almost like a collection of newspaper columns [...]
