Tags: Gigs, Spiked FuryI’ve just read another comic book (of all things). This time it’s Gonzo: A Graphic Biography of Hunter S. Thompson by Will Bingley and Anthony Hope-Smith. I must confess that I do know the artist and writer of this book which was my primary reason for reading it, but I must say it really is a pretty faultless Graphic Novel. It’s very good. I don’t say that because I know them, if anything I hoped that would have some constructive criticism to throw at them, but instead struggled to find things that I didn’t like about it. I’m not even the biggest Hunter S. Thompson fan in the world, it’s just a genuinely fascinating biography. It sets it’s self aside from the Ralph Steadman images of Thompson, and is instead drawn in a much clearer unflashy style, which really adds to the biography/documentary feel of the writing. Buy it here. Highly recommended. (more…)
Tags: Book Club, ComicsI recently appeared as a guest on the podcast of the fantastic record shop; Flashback in Essex Road, London. It was a Christmas special featuring exclusively Christmas records (which I wholeheartedly agree with) and they even let me do a reading of How the Grinch Stole Christmas by Dr. Suess, one of my all time favourite books. Hear the whole thing here. It is well Christmassey.
Tags: Christmas RecordsHappy Christmas gang! As long time readers will know I’m a huge fan of Christmas songs. I’ve written extensively about them here last year. If you like ‘em too why not come along to the Christmas Records Party at the Mucky Pup pub on the 18th December. (more…)
I rarely read comics these days but after reading Mould Map last week I’ve only gone and read another, although technically it’s a collection of comics I’ve already read in their previous incarnations. The book in question is Batman:Ego and Other Tails which is not a typo but a reference that the majority of the collection is actually made up with a Catwoman story. It’s a collection of Batman-related stories by Darwyn Cooke, who is one of my favourite cartoonists. I had initially been inspired to read it again after the comedian Henry Widdicombe had read it and was non-plussed with it, which surprised me because I remembered it being ace. Widdicombe has since had another go on it and decided I was right all along and so all order is now restored. Give it a go if you haven’t already and let me know what you think. (more…)

I just read Mould Map. It’s an A3 sized anthology of one page comics by a collection of seemingly like minded cartoonists and artists from all over the world. The strips are all short science fiction stories and often dreamlike and surreal. It’s an impressive object. Printed with just two colours on heavy stock paper means each page feels like a print. It’s interested to see how each artist has approached using this limited colour pallette. It features work from my pal Jonathan Chandler, Leon Sadler and Lando (who have all been mentioned in my blog previously) as well as as more established artists like C.F. Mould Map is available here, or here if you prefer to buy things in shops. (more…)

So this is my 200th post since I started this blog in October 2008 and the world must be celebrating because I can hear fireworks outside my window. It’s shocking really because over half of all of those posts were written between last December and March this year. Anyway what better way to commemorate this special occasion than with another of my boring Spiked Fury posts. Bonfire night has been a bit of a washout so I reckon there will be plenty of examples of spiked fury out there tomorrow so get snapping. (more…)
