Tombola of Fun is a new monthly comedy and variety night in the vein of Sunday Night at the London Palladium, or The Muppet Show. Featuring the funniest comedians, the game-show "Better or Worse?", and extra special guests. It's like a TV show, only there aren't any cameras and it's in a pub.

Here’s some of the transcript of a set I performed last week at Josie Long‘s Lost Treasures of the Black Heart Club. Incidentally the second Lost Treasures Podcast has also recently gone up:

Mockbusters is the modern name given to low budget movies that are made to piggy back on the publicity of far more successful movies. It’s been argued that this is a practice that has been around since the 50s but the most prolific contemporary producers of Mockbusters; Asylum Films have never been quite as blatant about it. Asylum Films are best known for their Mega Shark Vs Giant Octopus movies starring 80s pop singer Debbie Gibson. Incidentally last year Asylum made a movie called Mega Python Vs Gatoroid which stars both Debbie Gibson and Tiffiny, which in terms of 80s pop singers is the equivalent of Michael Mann’s movie Heat.

Asylum’s business model is that they release their movies straight to DVD at the same time as the cinema releases of often very similarly titled big studio movies. For example last Summer Asylum released a movies called The Almighty Thor at the same time as Paramount released their Mighty Thor movie. Here’s a few other of their high profile releases:

Transmorphers (It’s a bit like Transformers, but made on the same budget of an episode Homes Under The Hammer).
When Keanu Reeves’ remake of The Day The Earth Stood Still came out, Asylum released a film called The Day The Earth Stopped. Although apparently that still manages to be a better movie than the Keanu Reeves version.
They also made a film called Titanic 2: A film title that is both self explanatory and puzzling. And best of all in 2006 Asylum released a movie called Snakes On a Train.

But I don’t really have a problem with Asylum because I think a lot of their audience are in on the joke so now I suspect they’re deliberately making these “so bad they’re good movies”. The production companies that I have a problem with are those that make Mockbusters of kids movies, because that’s a whole different kettle of evil.

Video Brinquedo is a Brazillian CGI animation studio that make knock off Pixar movies and for me that’s going too far. You do not mess with Pixar! So far they’ve released films called Little Cars (based on Cars and Cars 2), Tiny Robots (based on Wall-E), and a film very similar to Pixar’s sublime Up called What’s Up?: Balloon to the Rescue! Worst of all Ratatouille; the story of a rat who becomes a top chef in Paris, its very title being a pun on the name of a French dish is “re-imagined” as Ratatouing Ratatouing! That doesn’t make any sense. It isn’t even a word!

But this is a practice that also went on on in the 90s by a home video distribution company called GoodTimes Entertainment. GoodTimes was perhaps an inappropriate title because no one watching them was having a Good Time. They’d often distribute animated films based on properties that were in the public domain. For example in 1993 GoodTimes produced the movie Beauty and the Beast, the same year as Disney produced their own version. GoodTimes followed it up in consecutive years with their own versions of Aladdin, Pocahontas, Hercules, and The Hunchback of Notre Dame.

Luckilly though of course Disney would sometimes produce some original animated movies like The Lion King which GoodTimes couldn’t replicate? But the same year the Disney released The Lion King, Goodtimes released a “completely unrelated film” called Leo The Lion: King of the Jungle.

The animation on these films were done by a company called Jetlag Productions. Why would you name your company after Jet lag? According to the NHS website symptoms of Jet lag include nausea, confusion, and diarrhoea. Not the things you’d ordinary like associated with your children’s animations although in this case it was oddly appropriate.

Eventually GoodTimes were sued by Disney and I’d usually stick up for the underdog against a huge multinational but these films really are rotten. The only purpose they truly serve is to confuse an elderly relative or to make a small child cry on Christmas morning. Let’s imagine for a moment that you’re a child on Christmas morning and you run down to open your presents and you’ve asked for The Jungle Book haven’t you? Because Disney’s The Jungle Book is perhaps the most Joyous film of all time isn’t it. And you unwrap the parcel and this shitty VHS comes out.

It’s only 50 minutes long. Although believe me, that’s 50 minutes too long. And just to add insult to injury, it is also a musical.

Over the last decade Nathaniel Metcalfe has wasted his life indulging his obscure minor obsessions and now he needs to justify it to you and himself.

Nathaniel Metcalfe has been doing stand up since May 2007, and got through to the semi-finals of the So You Think You’re Funny? competition after only five gigs. In 2010 he got through to the semi-final of the Laughing Horse New Act of the Year and the final of the Hackney Empire New Act of the Year. He is the only resident act at Josie Long’s Lost Treasures of the Black Heart club and supported her on the Manchester date of her current UK tour in January 2011.

Here’s what some people have said about him:

“”brilliant and unusual and very funny”
-Josie Long

“Nathaniel Metcalfe is particularly engrossing with a surreal, meandering line of dry observations, delivered in an perfectly unsettling manner. His Sugar Puffs/Honey Monster comment is the stuff of dreams”
-Thomas Meek, The List Magazine

“…there was only one that really stood out. That was Nathaniel Metcalfe, an unassuming dude who had just one joke which he stretched out to five minutes, about the theme song to a movie called The Barefoot Executive, starring Kurt Russell and a monkey. It was a doozy.”
-Tracer Hand, freakytrigger.co.uk

“There is a touch of the Stewart Lee about his delivery as he employs long pauses, and a great deal of repetition to emphasise his points, but it’s Lee on ecstasy. A friendly, jovial enthusiastic fellow, he did well to take the show to an interval on a high note.”
-Corry Shaw, Chortle

“…a brilliant act with some strong, dry yet surreal observations. Thoroughly enjoyable.”
-Red Redmond, gigglebeats.co.uk

“…his zany, entertaining and sharp yet silly style.”
-Zoe Coutts, freecomedy.co.uk

This is a work in progress show.

Hello gang,

My two preview gigs in Southend have both been cancelled, so myself and Chris Boyd are doing another Edinburgh preview in Camden on Friday (details below). Also please click ‘attending’ on the page for the event.
