The Worst British Movies of All Time 2

02.27.10 | 2 Comments

Earlier I nominated my three least favourite British Films of all time. Since then others have generously chimed in with their suggestions.

Richard Sandling suggests the following trio of terrible British Horror movies on the basis that they’re “appalling beyond the ways Hellraiser is”:

Rawhead Rex (1986)
Clive Barker, the Hellraiser director wrote this, and isn’t coming off at all well in this list. Deservedly so.

Funny Man (1994)
I’ve never seen Funny Man, but I’ve always wanted to, and on several occasions have nearly bought it. I think what’s stopped me is that I suspect Rich is almost certainly right, but really how bad can a film be that stars Christopher Lee, Rhona Cameron and Radio DJ Steve Wright really be? Probably pretty dreadful, and yet it still attracts me like a moth to an open flame. I mean Dr. Terror’s House of Horror stars Christopher Lee, Roy Castle, and Radio DJ Alan “Fluff” Freeman and that’s a bonifide classic!

The Lair of the White Worm (1988)
I think this should be excluded by virtue of being a Ken Russell movie and therefore successful in being just that. About 80% of Ken Russell films are no good, but I can still find them quite compelling in an odd way, but to be fair it isn’t good.

Sarah Pearce suggested:

High Hopes (1988)
I haven’t seen this either, but I can see it being very bad. Mike Leigh films too often are assumed to be brilliant when he far too often reduces his often working class characters to ridiculously broad characters that are about as realistic as an episode of Hi-Di-Hi. I don’t know how he gets away with it. I can only assume no one ever picks him up on it because his audience are not THOSE people, people who are almost lampooned to an almost offensive level. The stuff of his that work such as Nuts in May only work as broad comedy, but when he tries to transpose those characters into serious drama it can just become cringe worthy. In his defence Naked is a great movie, and I even have a soft spot for Topsy-Turvy, but I don’t tend to enjoy his movies so I don’t try to see all of them.

Richard Sandling will be appearing at Richard Sandling’s Perfect Movie on Tuesday 23rd March 2010 at:
The Green Man,
36 Riding House Street,
London,
W1W 7ES
8pm (7.30pm Doors)
£6
I will also be on performing (probably) one-off-film-based material alongside Robin Ince, Nick Helm, Nikesh Shukla, and James Mullinger.

Sarah Pearce will also be appearing at the following gigs. Go see her. She’s top dart.
