This blog was inspired by the release of the new movie Holy Water. Now I’m a big fan of stereotypical Irish comedy movies. Well, when I say “a big fan”, I mean “grimly fascinated by”, and when I say “movies” what I actually mean are “trailers”, because I honestly don’t think I sit through the whole of these movies. I learnt that lesson when I went to see the Queen Latifah/Steve Martin vehicle; Bringing Down the House after cringing my way through it’s awful trailer. Only then did I realise that watching something with an ironic/guilty pleasures type eye loses its appeal when the guilty pleasure lasts for 90 minutes. Imagine that trailer extended by 88 minutes and you’ll get some idea of the horror that was that evening.
These stereotypical Irish comedy movies celebrate the picture postcard, begorrah, nonsense that would be borderline offensive if the “Oirish” people weren’t portrayed as charming salt-of-the-Earth types, “to be shore”. Here’s a selection of some of my favourite stereotypical Irish comedy movie trailers. In some ways they provided something of an inspiration for my own Bombay Micks idea:
Holy Water
Waking Ned - this one even stars David Kelley of Bombay Micks fame.
The Van
Proper Rubbish.
