Kiran Shah: The Other Deep Roy

02.27.10 | 3 Comments

Last month I wrote about Deep Roy. Deep is often confused with another actor of restricted growth called Kiran Shah. Both men are are of Indian descent and both come from Kenya. They were born just a year apart (Kiran is the elder), and both worked together on the films The Dark Crystal, Return of the Jedi and Greystoke.

Kiran has almost as a good a C.V. as Deep having appeared in The People That Time Forgot, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Legend, Jeremy Brett‘s Sherlock Holmes series, and The Adventures of Baron Munchausen. He even played Elijah Wood‘s body double in The Lord of the Rings movies, and appeared in Michael Winner‘s Bullseye! A film that was considered one of the worst British movies ever made when it was released in 1990. It isn’t of course, these are. Bullseye! is a comedy crime caper starring Roger Moore, Derren Nesbitt and Michael Caine, written by Winner and Leslie Bricusse (Anthony Newley‘s writing partner). It is rubbish, but it’s still quite entertaining (in a way).

He’s also been stunt double in classic films like Candleshoe, Superman, Outland, Dragonslayer, Krull, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, and Spiceworld: The Movie. He was even the stunt double for Miss. Piggy in The Great Muppet Caper.

As a child I can remember being terrified by him in Ken Russell‘s Gothic and as Mr. Hyde‘s child at the end of the Michael Caine Jekyll TV movie. More recently he terrified me once again in Chris Cuningham’s “Come to Daddy” Aphex Twin video.
