Today’s “Love Song” is Love You Till Tuesday by David Bowie. It was recorded in 1967 and is probably the most well known song of his pre-Space Oddity/Anthony Newley period. Let me just say that I love David Bowie‘s records, I really do. Most Bowie fans don’t like this period, but they are wrong because it’s brilliant. I really would have the sixties mod Bowie over Ziggy Stardust any day of the week.
In the 1979 the song’s melody was ripped-off note for note for the brilliant Ronnie Hazelhurst‘s Blankety Blank theme. Anthony Newley and Syd Barrett were Bowie‘s biggest influences at this time, even though Barrett slated the single when he reviewed it for the Melody Maker. However many others on both sides of the Atlantic loved the record as Bowie received some of his earliest glowing reviews. The song appeared on Deram, a youthful, experimental imprint of Decca (Newley‘s label), which was also the home to Cat Stevens. A new brilliant Deluxe Edition version of all these songs have just been released, and features every remastered and alternate version of every song you can think of.
