My “Love Song” of the day is Love Really Hurts Without You by Billy Ocean from 1976. A terrific pop record that’s really easy to write off because it’s so familiar. It’s an incredibly upbeat song with brilliant downbeat lyrics, that are so simplistic that it as much in common with bubblegum pop as it does soul. I really like how Ocean’s British idioms come through on this otherwise very American sounding record:
you cheat and you lie
To impress any guy that you fancy.
I’m always amazed it’s not more widely covered as I think it’s a song waiting to be “ironically” rediscovered by some wey-faced indie band who’ll do a really sincere, whiny version of it.

its a wonderful song
