I was trying to think of some films which are about comedy. Not necessarily comedies, but films which are about comedy. Here are the few I could come up with.
King of Comedy (1982)
Robert De Niro stars as Rupert Pupkin an aspiring comedian who stalks talk show show host Jerry Langford, played by Jerry Lewis, playing a version of himself. This was seen as the end of the Scorsese/De Niro golden partnership of the 70s on release but its always been one of my favorites.
Punchline (1988)
Tom Hanks and Sally Field movie about Stand-Ups.
Funny Bones (1995)
I love this film. Oliver Platt plays the son of Jerry Lewis (playing a version of himself again), a stand-up very much in the shadow of his father. He flops at his debut performance, and heads to Blackpool where his dad developed his act. There he meets his half-brother played by Lee Evans, a natural comedian, and the worlds of British Vaudeville and American Stand-Up collide. It’s co-written by Peter Flannery who went on the write Our Friends in the North and The Devil’s Whore. I like to think of it as some kind of weird quasi-sequel to King of Comedy. Seems to be weirdly forgotten now, and didn’t even get a DVD release until 2004.
Funny People (2009)
Overlong Judd Apatow movie from last year about stand-ups. It has its moments but doesn’t really work. Worth seeing for Eric Bana‘s performance if nothing else though.
Let me know if you can think of any other good ones.

As I mentioned on Facebook “Punchline” with Tom Hanks and Sally Field is a watchable drama about stand-up, not brilliant I know but still watchable.
I saw Funny People just this week and though I agree it was overlong and overtly crude at times there is something about Sandler I just enjoy watching…
I remember thinking Funny Bones was brilliant. It’s a long time since I’ve seen it. I didn’t know it was written by your man Flannery. What a geez he is.
